Focus On What You Want, Not What You Don’t
It is easy, when facing a situation that you feel fear or anxiety around to fixate on the events or outcomes that you don’t want to happen. When you are afraid that something will happen, your brain naturally gravitates towards hoping that it will not. The reality is, however, that this kind of thinking can lead to more negative results and will certainly not help you feel a generally better sense of well being. Rather than fixating on the things you do not want to happen, keep your mind set on the things you do want and the ways you can make them happen.
Take Time to Be Thankful For the Things That Are Going Well
Gratitude is closely tied to happiness. The more thankful you are for the things in your life that you are happy about, the less time your mind has to fixate on things it may be worried about. Be consistently grateful to yourself for all of the hard work you have done to maintain your sobriety and vocalize your thanks to the people in your life who have supported you and continue to be a positive influence.
Help Others Less Fortunate Than You
Engaging in acts of service does wonders for positive thought because it helps you realize how lucky you are to have certain people and other blessings in your life. Helping others is also a great way to feel good about yourself, which helps fuel the creation of positivity in all of your thoughts.
Have Short Term and Long Term Goals
Goals are like a road map that can be navigated with hard work and positive thought. Set small day to day goals that can reasonably be accomplished as well as longer term goals that you can work on over time. Making a habit of accomplishing even small goals helps to reinforce in your brain the fact that with work and time it is possible to do what you set out to do. Check in frequently with the progress of your longer term goals and make a habit of acknowledging to yourself all of the ways in which you have succeeded. If you do not meet a goal on your anticipated timeline, focus on your resolve to make it happen anyway.
